Greeks Who Worship​

This story assignment was about the fraternity Phi Gamma Delta holding a weekly bible study. It required me to focus on capturing good A roll and especially good B roll and apply the techniques we learned in class to produce a good product. I produced this story by bring a cannon mirrorless camera to the event and setting it up on a tripod while they did their bible study. Throughout the process, I worked on improving my ability to capture good B roll shots in a cramped room while creating a final product that communicated a clear visual story.

Some of the most interesting discoveries I made while working on this story involved is that angles are everything. I realized that each angle had a completely different composition of the room, which changed the way I approached the project. For example, I would move from each side of the room to shoot the group or move in on or above people reading to capture a great shot. I also discovered how much of a difference timing makes a clip. This is because if they weren't in the middle of a discussion or reading then the footage didn't really make sense in the clip and I would have to edit it out when I went back.

One of the challenges I encountered while working on this story was dealing with a cramped basement full of people. For example, the basement was small and filled with people so I couldn't really move around wherever I wanted when filming. These obstacles forced me to adjust my approach and think more carefully about how I planned and executed each step. I overcame the challenge by using every angle each spot that I shot from offered. For example, I would turn the camera different ways and zoom in on certain things going on to make it look nice and fresh in the video. Working through these issues strengthened my ability to adapt.

I will use what I learned from this story assignment in future courses in my major to improve my ability to shoot and edit a video to tell a compelling story. For example, learning how to use Adobe Premiere Pro will help me edit projects in future classes or at my work. This project helped me understand the importance of angles, and that experience will benefit me as I continue developing my communication and visual storytelling abilities. This assignment showed me how to create content with limited space, and I know these techniques will help me produce clearer, more engaging visual stories in the future.
